EditorÕs Introductory Note:

As the summer gets underway, we have another neighborhood work party geared toward taking care of our neighborhood park, Halcyon Commons, coming up this month (see item 1) as well as a chance to continue strengthening our neighborhood crime watch with a fun ice cream social in early August (see item 2 for ways you can help), which will also serve as a chance to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Halcyon Neighborhood Association! Later in the summer, our rebooted Halcyon CERT group will be putting on a disaster preparedness expo in Halcyon Commons park on Sunday morning August 27 (see item 3); please save the date if youÕll be in town!

HereÕs to a great summer in the Halcyon neighborhood!

We donÕt have any student volunteers to help with this work party, so itÕs up to us neighbors! WeÕll be getting our neighborhood common space spiffed up for our National Night Out Against Crime Ice Cream Social in the Park on August 1 (see item 2).

Save the Date: Sunday, August 27, 10 a.m. to Noon

Halcyon Neighborhood CERT Expo!

Halcyon Commons park (Halcyon at Prince)

Refreshments courtesy of Whole Foods Market

Fresh Coffee courtesy of Starbucks

The HNA CERT Group will hold its annual expo 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on August 27th in Halcyon Commons park. The themes this year are Applicability and Education. Rather than quickly exposing people to a great number of ideas and techniques, we plan for each station to explore a few things in depth and allow enough hands-on practice that people will leave the expo with skills they will still be able to use, should they need to, in six months or a year. We also plan to educate attendees as to available resources, CERTÕs mission, and opportunities to learn though, and participate in, CERT.

The next HNA CERT meeting is July 27th at 7 p.m. (address on Prince TBD), and all community members are very much invited to participate. Frankly, we could use a few more pairs of hands! For more information, feel free to contact hnacert@gmail.com.

6. Neighbor Seeking Cat Boarding with Neighbor in August

EditorÕs note: A Prince Street neighbor submitted the following announcement.

Hi, I live on Prince Street and I am exchanging houses with a couple in Wales from August 15 to 24. They canÕt have a cat in the house, so I need someone to board my 5-year-old Calico female, Swahila. She is social and friendly. I will pay someone $100 to take her into your home, and I will provide all food and equipment. You cannot have a cat or a dog. Please spread this message to your friends. 7. Crime Watch Update

EditorÕs note: Our HNA Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=292160762499 often shares breaking crime reports in between E-News editions (your home and email addresses plus phone are required to participate so we can be sure the group is kept safe for neighbors, and we require this information prior to accepting your request to join). Remember, we rely on neighbors to fill in the details of crimes in our neighborhood, so, in addition to filing a police report (which can now be done online through the City of Berkeley website for some kinds of crimes: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/onlinereport/), please email halcyon92@gmail.com to pass the word on to your neighbors, or share it on our Facebook page, so we can all stay aware and vigilant. We donÕt want to engage in profiling, so if you include a description, please make it as detailed as possible and avoid generalities.

Crime update: It has been a while since weÕve had a list of cumulative crimes submitted for the E-News, but you can check out the details yourself at http://www.crimemapping.com/home or sign up for daily updates. If youÕd like to volunteer to compile a list every month or two, email halcyon92@gmail.com
